Greetings. I'm so glad you dropped by to visit me and my books here on the Internet.
As you already know, books can be wonderful places to visit. And there are many ways to visit books. In classrooms, in libraries, in bookstores, and now on the World Wide Web!
For me, writing is a wonderful adventure. On my writing journeys I meet characters who speak with colorful language. I hear rhythms that make me laugh. I feel a young girl's hope, a young boy's mischief, and a teenager's despair.
Reading, too, can be a splendid adventure. I hope my books will sometimes make you bounce with laughter, will often make you stop and think, and will open up many new pathways to joy.
Yours truly,
Joyce Carol Thomas
Joyce Carol Thomas is a critically-acclaimed, award-winning author of poetry, short stories, and novels for children, young adults, and adults. The author of three national best-sellers, her words seem to flow directly from her heart to yours, with a gentle grace and beauty that will lift your spirit. Ms. Thomas' books have been published by HarperCollins, Avon Books, and Scholastic Inc.

Ms. Thomas' newest book, I Have Heard of a Land,, which won a 1999 Coretta Scott King illustrator Honor Book Award as well as a 1999 International Reading Association Teacher's Award, poetically recalls the remarkable story of the great Oklahoma Land Rush in the late 19th century, during which Blacks could stake a claim for a land and a life to call their own. The book was inspired by the true story of Ms. Thomas' courageous great-grandmother Judy Graham, who was among the thousands of brave women and men who sought to create a better future for themselves and their families.

Two board books for the very young, Cherish Me and You Are My Perfect Baby, are also now available.

Joyce Carol Thomas' popular 1994 poem and picture book, Brown Honey in Broomwheat Tea received the coveted Coretta Scott King Author and Illustrator Book Award, as well as recognition as A Notable Children's Book in the Language Art award, and recognition as A Notable Children's Trade Book in the Field of Social Studies. Brown Honey in Broomwheat Tea continues to be a favorite of children everywhere.

Ms. Thomas' 1982 novel, Marked By Fire, captured both the prestigious National Book Award and the American Book Award, and led to the musical play Abyssinia, which has toured the nation to record-setting audiences since 1987. To hear the music, please click here.

A Gathering of Flowers is Ms. Thomas' groundbreaking 1990 anthology of short stories for young adults.
